The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service has disclosed the true cause of the explosion that shook the Ijora-Badia area of Lagos on Sunday afternoon, leaving at least 15 people injured.

In a statement from Margaret Adeseye, the Director of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, it was explained that the explosion took place at approximately 4:10 p.m. inside a small shop that contained 25kg gas cylinders.

The shop, situated within a bungalow that also housed 15 self-contained rooms and seven other shops, was found to have five gas cylinders at the time of the explosion.

According to Adeseye, the explosion was caused by improper gas management, which resulted in a leak that was sparked by a nearby flame.

“It was a case of poor handling of gas products, which unfortunately allowed gas to escape and come in contact with a flame. This triggered the explosion,” she confirmed.

According to her, a group of firefighters from the Sari Iganmu Fire Station quickly put out the ensuing fire with assistance from the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, LASEMA, the Lagos Neighbourhood Safety Corps, and LASAMBUS.

Although there were no reported fatalities, 15 people suffered burn injuries of various intensities.

According to Adeseye, some casualties received first assistance on the spot, while others were transported to surrounding hospitals for additional medical attention.

She also reassured the locals that security had been put in place and life had returned to normal.
