BANANA ISLAND LOCKDOWN: ESTATE GATES CLOSED, TRAFFIC GRIDLOCK SPREADS TO LEKKI-AJAH AXIS

Read Time:2 Minute, 8 Second

On Tuesday, the entrance and exit to Banana Island, which is located in Lagos State’s Ikoyi Area, were closed.

In several areas of Ikoyi, including the Lekki-Ajah axis, this stoppage has resulted in traffic jams.

There are rumors that the Banana Club House’s planned demolition was the cause of the closure.

Vehicles in their lengthy lines were spotted stuck in the estate in a widely shared video on Tuesday, while some men were stationed at the gate.

The government entities in charge of the development were the subject of conflicting statements at the time this report was filed.

Some claimed that state government agencies were to blame, while others blamed federal government agencies.

The Lagos State Building Control Agency denied being in the area when our journalist contacted them to inquire about the blockage, citing a widely shared broadcast message claiming that the estate gates had been sealed from residents.

The broadcast message which circulated on Tuesday read, “Lagos State Govt agency has just shut down Banana Island — disallowing residents and visitors from entering or leaving.”

Another claim corroborating the message on X by a user identified as #Nothingispromised said, “We love suffering in this country. So because government officials dey Banana Island, no car fit go in or out of the estate until they are gone? They have successfully created another crazy traffic that will affect Lekki and part of Ikoyi.”

Reacting, the spokesperson for LABSCA, Adu Ademuyiwa, noted that the claim that their officials are on the ground disrupting activities in the area is unfounded.

He said, “It is not true. Our men are not there. And we have not stopped any residents or visitors from entering their estate on Banana Island. When the time for the demolition of the illegal buildings in the area would be done, we will communicate it appropriately to the public.”

The government’s commitment to upholding urban planning regulations and guaranteeing public safety would come after the decision to destroy unlawful buildings on Banana Island.

Gbolahan Oki, the general manager of the organization, claims that LASBCA has taken comparable measures in other regions of the state, such as Abule Egba, Iya Niba, and Iyana Isheri, where unlawful structures beneath high-tension wires were demolished.

This was revealed during a recent stakeholders’ meeting on Banana Island by Gbolahan Oki, general manager of the Lagos State Building Control Agency.

He promised to identify and demolish any buildings that were proven to be in violation of construction codes, especially those located beneath high-tension power lines and in coastline restrictions.
