CUSTOMS SEIZE N18M WORTH OF DRUGS FROM SMUGGLERS IN C’RIVER
In Cross River State, the Nigeria Customs Service seized a shipment of illegal pharmaceuticals worth N18 million from alleged smugglers.
The NCS’s Akwa Ibom Area Command and Cross River-Calabar Free Trade Zone were responsible for the seizure, which took place at the Mfum Border.
The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency has since received 659 units of confiscated banned substances for additional investigation and prosecution.
36 packets of phenobarbital, 37 units of sodium sterop, 108 units of fentanyl 50mm, 33 units of midazolam mylan, 26 units of sodium injectables, 216 units of pethidine 100mg, and 216 units of morphine sulfate are among the substances that were intercepted.
Comptroller Gabriel Ogbonna, the Area Comptroller, praised the diligence and commitment of his officers during the official handover ceremony on Wednesday at the NCS Command Headquarters in Calabar. He emphasized that the operation was a manifestation of the increasing cooperation between the NDLEA and Customs.
He said, “On behalf of the Comptroller General of the NCS, I hereby hand over these items to the NDLEA. This handover is in accordance with the Memorandum of Understanding between our agencies.
“Today’s event is not just about the seizure it is a learning point for younger officers in both agencies to understand the importance of collaboration. Together, we leverage each other’s strengths to promote national security and development.”
Rachael Umebuali, the NDLEA Commander in Cross River State, praised the NCS for its ongoing assistance and interagency collaboration after receiving the materials.
She pointed out that these initiatives improve both organizations’ operational effectiveness.
“We appreciate this gesture and partnership. This collaboration not only strengthens our operational capacity but also ensures our service to Nigerians is effective and impactful,” she said.
