At least six people, including a pregnant woman, have been killed, and several homes have been destroyed in a fresh outbreak of violence related to a longstanding land dispute in Ebonyi State.

The conflict is reportedly between the Ndukwe community in Amasiri, Afikpo Local Government Area, and Okporojo in Oso, Edda Local Government Area.

The recent violence has led to the destruction of properties worth millions of naira, worsening a conflict that has been ongoing for decades between the neighboring communities.

The dispute has previously resulted in numerous deaths and extensive property damage, totaling billions of naira.

In fear of further violence, residents of Edda are reportedly avoiding the Amasiri road and choosing to travel through Afikpo town for their safety.

Chima Ekumankama, Chairman of Edda LGA, confirmed the renewed violence and stated that security forces had been deployed to restore peace and prevent further escalation.

“I can assure you that normalcy and peace have returned to the area. I personally visited and witnessed the level of destruction. As we speak, there are sufficient security personnel on the ground to prevent any further violence,” Ekumankama stated.

The state government had deployed security forces in the buffer zone between the communities to de-escalate tensions and preserve peace, according to Timothy Nwachi, the chairman of Afikpo LGA.

Nwachi urged Amasiri residents to maintain their composure as the government attempts to find a long-term solution to the land dispute, calling the recent violence regrettable.
