EGG DONATION MAY AFFECT YOUR FERTILITY, UI WARNS AMID RECENT TREND AMONG STUDENTS
The University Health Service (UHS) of the University of Ibadan has raised concern over the growing number of female students getting involved in egg donation.
In a memorandum obtained by Hotjist Media, the health service said it had noticed a rising trend where students are being recruited by individuals, agents, or agencies to donate their eggs for In-Vitro Fertilization (IVF).
While noting that egg donation has helped many couples struggling with infertility, the UHS warned that it should not be seen as a steady source of income or a “side hustle.”
The statement explained that egg donation involves using hormonal drugs to stimulate the ovaries, which can lead to several short-term health problems such as abdominal pain, breast tenderness, bloating, mood swings, bleeding, ovarian torsion, and even psychological stress. Some donors have also reported losing their fertility over time.
The memo added that research is still unclear about how many times it is safe to donate eggs or who is medically fit to do so.
UHS advised students not to donate more than three times in a year and to always go through certified clinics that follow proper medical guidelines and prioritize the donor’s safety.
The university is urging students to take their health seriously and avoid making decisions that could harm them in the future.
