A Kano High Court has sentenced 22-year-old Sagiru Rijiyar-Zaki to death by hanging for the murder of his stepmother, Rabiatu Sagir, and his sister, Munawara.

The incident occurred in Kutama Village, Gwarzo Local Government Area of Kano State. Rijiyar-Zaki was found guilty of culpable homicide.

In her judgment, Justice Amina Adamu-Aliyu stated that the prosecution had proven its case beyond reasonable doubt and accordingly sentenced the defendant to death by hanging.

Prosecution counsel, Lamido Abba-Sorondinki, told the court that the offence was committed on January 7, 2023, at Rijiyar Zaki Quarters in Kano. At around 8:00 p.m., the convict stabbed his stepmother in the neck with a screwdriver following a disagreement and later strangled his sister with her scarf.

The prosecution called two witnesses and tendered exhibits to establish its case. Rijiyar-Zaki, however, denied the charges.

According to the prosecution, the offence contravenes Section 221(a) of the Penal Code Law of Kano State, 1991.

Defence counsel, Mubarak Abubakar, presented the accused to testify in his own defence.
