The Vatican has begun preparations for the upcoming conclave that will select a successor to Pope Francis, who passed away on Monday at the age of 88.

According to Vatican sources, the pope died following a stroke and cardiac arrest. His funeral has been scheduled for Saturday.

After nine days of official mourning, cardinals from across the globe will gather in the Sistine Chapel to cast secret ballots in the election of the new pope—a process that typically lasts two to three weeks. After each round of voting, the ballots are burned.

Once a new pope is chosen, white smoke will rise from the Sistine Chapel’s chimney, symbolizing the beginning of a new papal era for the world’s 1.4 billion Catholics.

A ceremonial mass in honor of the 267th pope is expected to follow within a few days.

In the meantime, Cardinal Kevin Farrell, originally from Ireland and now a naturalized American citizen, will act as the camerlengo (or chamberlain), overseeing day-to-day operations of the Vatican and preparing for the conclave.
