Read Time:1 Minute, 25 Second

Peter Nwachukwu, the late gospel singer Osinachi’s husband, was given a hanging death sentence by Justice Njideka Nwosu-Iheme of the Federal Capital Territory’s High Court, Wuse Zone 2, Abuja.

On April 8, 2022, Justice Nwosu-Iheme declared him guilty of culpable homicide, which caused the death of the victim.

After the court determined that the prosecution had met the legal burden of proof and found the defendant guilty, the judge condemned Nwachukwu to death for his crimes.

On behalf of the Federal Government, the Office of the Attorney-General of the Federation (OAGF) arraigned Nwachukwu on June 3, 2022, on a 23-count charge that included spousal battery, criminal intimidation, cruelty to children, culpable homicide punishable by death, and other offences.

The prosecution brought 17 witnesses during the trial, including two of the late Osinachi’s children, who testified as the fourth and fifth prosecution witnesses, PW4 and PW5, respectively. The prosecution also presented the court with 25 documents as exhibits.

The defendant summoned four additional witnesses, presented four exhibits, and testified on behalf of the defence.

Reginald Nwali, the defendant’s attorney for Nwachukwu, begged the court to be lenient in its decision just before the defendant was sentenced, while Mrs Aderonke Imala, the prosecuting attorney, encouraged the court to enforce the law as specified.

On Count 1, Nwachukwu was later given a hanging death sentence by Justice Nwosu-Iheme, and on Counts 2, 3, 8, 9, 12, 13, and 18, he received two-year prison sentences apiece.

The defendant was fined ₦500,000 on Count 6 and ₦200,000 on Count 7, and the court sentenced him to three years in jail on Count 11 and six months in prison on Count 10.
