AISHA ACHIMUGU BEGINS HUNGER STRIKE WHILE IN EFCC CUSTODY
Prominent businesswoman and socialite Aisha Achimugu is reportedly on a hunger strike while in the custody of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), following her arrest by the agency’s operatives.
Her legal representative, Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Mr. Chikaosolu Ojukwu, confirmed in a statement on Tuesday in Abuja that Achimugu was taken into custody around 5 a.m. at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the EFCC had declared Achimugu wanted in March 2025 over alleged involvement in criminal conspiracy and money laundering.
NAN also notes that Justice I.E. Ekwo of the Federal High Court in Abuja had, on Monday, ordered Achimugu to present herself at the EFCC office on Tuesday and to appear in court on Wednesday.
According to Ojukwu, Achimugu had returned voluntarily from London to comply with the EFCC’s summons. He stated that her intention to visit the commission on Tuesday was formally communicated to the court on Monday, in connection with the ongoing investigation into the allegations against her.
”In the light of what transpired in court on Monday, our client returned based on the undertaking before the court to honour the EFCC’s invitation, but was arrested at the airport.
”She has immediately gone on a hunger strike. She is a prisoner of conscience and our stand in the arrest is that it has run contrary to the rule of law,” he said.
The phone rang repeatedly without picking up, according to NAN, making attempts to contact EFCC spokesman Dele Oyewale regarding Achimugu’s detention unsuccessful.
As the Group Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Felak Concept Group, a conglomerate of enterprises in the fields of engineering, maritime, oil and gas, and information technology, Ojukwu described Achimugu as a well-known business magnate.
