JUST IN: FG’S WITNESSES TO TESTIFY BEHIND SCREEN IN NNAMDI KANU’S TERRORISM TRIAL
The witnesses who are scheduled to testify against Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, will do so in front of the camera.
After a request from the Federal Government, which was represented by attorney Adegboyega Awomolo (SAN), the decision was made.
The witnesses in the terrorist case against Kanu were allowed to testify behind a screen on Tuesday after Awomolo requested it from Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court in Abuja.
The Federal Government has charged Kanu with seven counts of terrorism.
During the court session, Justice Omotosho ruled on an ex-parte application filed by Awomolo.
The Federal Government’s counsel argued that the identities of the witnesses needed to be protected for security reasons, given the sensitive nature of the terrorism charges.
Awomolo requested that the names of the witnesses be shielded from public disclosure to ensure their safety.
Kanu’s legal counsel, Kanu Agabi (SAN), raised no objection to the application, leading Justice Omotosho to approve the request.
Nonetheless, Agabi asked the Federal Government to show similar cooperation when Kanu’s bail application is brought forward.
With both parties in agreement, the Federal Government began presenting its case by calling its first witness, referred to as PWAAA.
The witness has started giving evidence as the prosecution officially begins its trial against Kanu.
