LAGOS LG POLLS: APC CLEARS 432 CHAIRMANSHIP ASPIRANTS FOR MAY 10 PRIMARIES
The Lagos State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has approved 432 chairmanship aspirants to participate in the party’s primaries set for May 10, 2025, ahead of the local government elections slated for July 12.
This follows a comprehensive week-long screening exercise held at the APC state secretariat on Acme Road, Ogba, from April 29 to May 3. Out of 470 aspirants screened, 38 were either disqualified or voluntarily withdrew from the contest.
Among those who stepped down was Abdul-Ganiyu Obasa, son of Lagos State House of Assembly Speaker, Mudashiru Obasa, reportedly after the intervention of APC National Leader and President Bola Tinubu.
The disqualifications were primarily attributed to issues such as absence of Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs), missing APC membership cards, and inconsistencies in academic records, particularly secondary school certificates.
The screening committee was chaired by former National Legal Adviser and ex-Lagos lawmaker Babatunde Ogala, with Mr. Babarinde Nurudeen as secretary.
The panel is also responsible for managing pre-election activities across the state’s 20 Local Government Areas and 37 Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs).
In line with party rules, the primaries will be conducted through an indirect system, with delegates selected from executives in the LGAs and LCDAs.
Disqualified aspirants have until May 5 to file appeals, while post-primary petitions can be submitted between May 12 and 13.
Ogala described the exercise as “thorough, rigorous, and demanding,” noting that the cleared aspirants are well-equipped to deliver effective leadership at the grassroots level.
Of the 470 screened, 411 were male and 59 female, highlighting what the party views as growing female participation in local governance.
