UCL: REFEREE MADE MISTAKE IN INTER’S 4-3 WIN OVER BARCELONA – ARSENE WENGER

Read Time:1 Minute, 15 Second

Former Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has argued that Barcelona were unfairly penalized by a referee’s decision during their 4-3 loss to Inter Milan in Tuesday’s Champions League semi-final second leg.

Barça had mounted a comeback from two goals down and appeared set for the final at San Siro.

Lautaro Martinez opened the scoring for Inter with a well-taken goal and later won a penalty, which Hakan Calhanoglu converted. The penalty was awarded after a VAR review ruled that Pau Cubarsí fouled Martinez as he broke through on goal—despite referee Szymon Marciniak initially allowing play to continue.

Wenger, speaking on beIN Sports, expressed disagreement with the final decision.

“I am highly against these kinds of penalties, and I am highly against using slow motion,” he said.

“At normal pace, this is a great tackle; he’s first on the ball. Why does he touch him?

“Look what Lautaro is doing. He leans into him, he looks for the penalty, and he knows he cannot score because he feels the defender there.

“The referee, in this situation, has not made the right decision. He [Cubarsi] is first to the ball, and that’s what counts for me.”

Raphinha scored an 87th-minute goal to put the LaLiga giants 3-2 up on the night and 6-5 up on aggregate.

But Inter defender Francesco Acerbi volleyed home a dramatic equalizer to take the tie to extra time, where Davide Frattesi scored the decisive goal.
