American Cardinal, Robert Francis Prevost has been elected as the new Pope.

Prevost will now be addressed at Pope Leo XIV.

White smoke billowed from the chimney atop the Vatican’s Sistine Chapel on Thursday, signalling that the 133 cardinals inside have elected a new pope.

Prevost, 69, was greeted with huge cheers from thousands gathered in St Peter’s Square. He was elected a Cardinal in 2023 by Pope Francis.

“May peace be with all of you,” he says from the Vatican balcony.

Chicago-born Prevost is seen as a reformer and worked for many years as a missionary in Peru before being made an archbishop there.

The new pontiff called on the crowd to pray to the Virgin Mary “together” for her blessing.

He then led the people in a quick prayer, which is greeted by further cheering.

After concluding his speech, the new Pope then read a religious passage in Latin paying homage to the saints and the Madonna.
