EFCC REMOVES MERCY CHINWO FROM FRAUD CASE AGAINST EEZEETEE
In a surprising development, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has removed gospel singer Mercy Chinwo’s name from its revised charges against music executive Ezekiel Onyedikachi, popularly known as EeZeeTee.
Initially, the EFCC had accused EeZeeTee, the CEO of EeZee Global Concept Ltd, of misappropriating Chinwo’s earnings. However, at a Federal High Court session in Lagos on Wednesday, the commission presented a new eight-count charge focused instead on alleged financial regulation violations.
The updated charges claim EeZeeTee failed to report company financial activities and conducted unauthorized foreign currency transactions between 2022 and 2023. According to the EFCC, EeZee Global Concept Ltd received $255,436 during that period without disclosing it to the Special Control Unit Against Money Laundering.
Further allegations include that in June 2023, while not licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria to buy foreign currency, EeZeeTee arranged a forex transaction worth $52,895 with Oladotun Mureke. Another unapproved transaction of $18,775 was also reportedly conducted with Gift Ugochi Christopher.
EeZeeTee pleaded not guilty to all the allegations. His lawyer, Chikaosolu Ojukwu (SAN), told the court that a bail request had already been filed and both parties were considering an out-of-court resolution. However, EFCC counsel Bilikisu Buhari opposed the bail and urged the court to remand the defendant until a decision is made.
Justice Chukwujekwu Aneke requested clarification on how EeZeeTee appeared in court. While the EFCC claimed an arrest warrant had been issued, Ojukwu stated his client had been granted administrative bail and appeared voluntarily, with no record of any ignored EFCC summons.
The judge postponed the ruling on the bail request to May 9, 2025, and allowed EeZeeTee to be released into his lawyer’s custody in the meantime.
Outside the courtroom, tensions rose when EFCC officers attempted to re-arrest EeZeeTee. The situation was calmed by a senior EFCC official, allowing him to leave peacefully.
