TRAGIC: MASQUERADE FOLLOWER SHOT DEAD DURING PROCESSION IN OSUN
A follower of the Orogun Meji masquerade, identified simply as Olubukola, has been reportedly shot dead by an operative of the Amotekun Corps during a procession in Ikirun, Osun State.
The incident occurred on Monday, during a parade held to herald the performance of the masquerade as part of preparations for the Egungun Festival scheduled for the following day.
Eyewitnesses, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the deceased, a truck driver affiliated with the Eko-Ende Tipper Motor Park, was among those accompanying the masquerade during the procession when chaos broke out
According to them, the Amotekun operative, said to have been hired by the Orogun Meji masquerade group to provide security, was reportedly engaged in a scuffle when some individuals allegedly attempted to wrestle his rifle from him.
In the confusion, Olubukola was allegedly shot in the leg.
“The incident happened on the 6th of May, 2025, in Ikirun. Family and friends of Orogunmeji masquerade were on parade around Ikirun in the evening in preparation for the Egungun festivals, which were to commence a few hours later.
“In the course of that parade, chaos erupted, which led to the dragging of a rifle with one of the Amotekun Corps. One of the followers of the Orogunmeji Masquerade, named Olubukola, who also worked as a truck driver at Eko-Ende Tipper Motor Park, was eventually shot in the leg by an Amotekun Corp operative.
“After the incident, Olubukola was rushed to a nearby hospital by us. But unfortunately, he could not make it as he later gave up the ghost in the early hours of Tuesday,” one of the eyewitnesses said.
Confirming the incident during a chat on Wednesday, the spokesperson for the Osun State Police Command, SP Abiodun Ojelabi, said the head of the Orogun Meji masquerade group has been invited for questioning.
“The incident happened on Monday. We invited the head of the Orogun Meji masquerade for questioning, as we were informed that he was the one who engaged the Amotekun operative. Investigation is ongoing,” Ojelabi stated.
