‎To protect residents who rent homes in Lagos State, the government has strongly criticized landlords and agents who arbitrarily hike rents, especially in response to infrastructure upgrades or without clear justification.

‎The Special Adviser on Housing to the Lagos State Real Estate Regulatory Authority, Barrister Barakat Odunuga Bakare, said the government will no longer remain passive while residents are exploited by property owners and agents.

‎She clarified the separate responsibilities of agents and legal practitioners in rental transactions, noting that lawyers have limited roles in such matters.

‎Barrister Odunuga Bakare also mentioned that the state’s tenancy law is being reviewed to include provisions such as caution fees, which are not currently covered. She urged tenants to report any violations by landlords or agents to LASRERA, either in person or online.

‎She reaffirmed Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s commitment to addressing housing issues by working with landlords, property associations, and developers to control high rental costs.

‎Additionally, she stressed the government’s commitment to fairness in allocating state-owned housing, guided by clear and transparent criteria.

‎Finally, she advised residents to verify the registration status of agents and developers with LASRERA before making any transactions, and encouraged all real estate professionals to register with the agency.
