‎The Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital (ATBUTH) in Bauchi has launched an internal investigation into claims that a woman died as a result of negligence by staff at its Renal Centre.

‎The case drew public attention after Ibrahim Katagum alleged in a Facebook post that hospital personnel abandoned his mother during dialysis. According to him, a nurse left her unattended while she was still connected to the machine, during which a critical tube became detached, causing her blood to spill onto the floor and ultimately leading to her death.

‎”I found the nurse outside chatting while our mother was left tied to the blood filter. Her blood drained onto the floor after the tube detached,” Katagum wrote in Hausa. He added that the attending doctors were reportedly shocked at her sudden death, considering the condition she had been left in.

‎In response, ATBUTH’s Head of Public Relations and Protocol, Usman Koli, expressed condolences to the grieving family and confirmed that a full investigation was underway to uncover the truth behind the incident.

‎“We are committed to getting to the root of the matter and will take every necessary step to address any failings and ensure this never happens again,” Koli stated in a Facebook post.

‎He also advised members of the public to report complaints through the hospital’s official channels rather than relying solely on social media, which he said may not always provide balanced or accurate representations of events.
