After four years of silence and separation, 41-year-old Adeola, daughter of Nollywood actress Jumoke George, has finally reunited with her family in Lagos, thanks to the swift intervention of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM).
The emotional reunion took place at the Lagos office of NIDCOM, following efforts initiated by popular talk show host Abiola Bayo, who brought the matter to public attention during an episode of Talk to B. In the interview, actress Jumoke George had shared her pain over losing contact with her daughter for years.
Moved by the story, Abiola Bayo reached out to NIDCOM. Its Chairman/CEO, Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, promptly contacted the Acting Nigerian High Commissioner in Mali, Ambassador Ugo Chime. Their combined efforts led to the safe return of Adeola to Nigeria.
Speaking at the reunion, a visibly relieved and joyful Adeola thanked Hon. Dabiri-Erewa, Ambassador Chime, and Abiola Bayo for their roles in securing her return. She also acknowledged the support of actor Niyi Johnson, who was present at the event.
Adeola recounted how she was deceived into traveling to Mali under the promise of a job in a pharmacy. Upon arrival, she discovered she had been sold into servitude—a fate she resisted. Overwhelmed by shame and crushed hopes, she said she chose not to contact her family during the ordeal.
Hon. Dabiri-Erewa, in her remarks, welcomed Adeola and praised her courage. She used the opportunity to warn Nigerians, especially young women, against falling for fraudulent job offers in countries like Libya and Mali, which often turn into paths to modern slavery.
“This is a story of hope, survival, and a strong message to others. Adeola was lucky. Many are not so fortunate. We urge our citizens to be vigilant and verify every job offer abroad,” she stated.
Adeola, who had been living with her grandmother in Ibadan before her disappearance, was last seen after informing her family she was traveling to Lagos.
Host Abiola Bayo expressed profound gratitude to the federal government and NIDCOM for their prompt and effective intervention, calling the outcome a testament to what can be achieved through collaboration and compassion.
The reunion brings closure to a painful chapter in the lives of the George family and serves as a poignant reminder of the dangers posed by human trafficking and deceptive overseas job offers.
Speaking in tears on the TalkToB show hosted by fellow actress Abiola Adebayo, Jumoke said she hid her predicament out of shame and fear of public ridicule.
The veteran actress explained that her health began to deteriorate earlier this year, which forced her to cancel scheduled acting jobs.
She said, “There are some things that are embarrassing to say, but at this point, I have no choice. I want to speak out. I am working, but it’s not like I get jobs every time.
“My first child, Adeola, has been missing. I’ve been looking for her for the past four years. Any small amount of money I got from work was spent looking for her.
“She was in Ibadan, where she was working and living with my mother. So my mother just called me one day to say that she hadn’t seen Deola, who said she was coming to meet me in Lagos. I said I haven’t seen her.”
She disclosed that Adeola, however, called one day to beg for forgiveness and informed her that she had migrated with some friends in search of a better life, but they had encountered something different.
Meanwhile, Dabiri commended Actress Bola Adebayo for breaking the story about the veteran actress’ daughter and actor Niyi Johnson.
“Just received her, with Biola Adebayo, who broke the story, and Niyi Johnson. Details later!”
