By: Motunrayo Aniwura
There was chaos at the Alake Sports Complex in Ijeja, Abeokuta — one of the venues for the ongoing 2024 National Sports Festival in Ogun State — after a gas explosion occurred in the area.
The explosion reportedly happened when a gas truck supplying fuel to the complex’s generator caught fire, causing panic as athletes and spectators fled the scene to avoid harm.
Emergency responders quickly arrived and brought the situation under control.
No casualties have been confirmed so far.
Sporting activities at the venue, including handball, squash, and badminton, had resumed by the time the report was filed.
