The Federal Government, through the Ministry of Housing and Urban Development, has officially taken possession of a 753-unit housing estate in Abuja previously owned by the former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Godwin Emefiele.

The property, recovered by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), was formally handed over to the Ministry on Tuesday at its headquarters in Mabushi, Abuja.

In a statement issued by the Ministry’s spokesman, Salisu Haiba, Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Ahmed Dangiwa, commended the EFCC for its continued efforts in asset recovery and the broader fight against corruption.

“The Ministry of Housing and Urban Development has taken delivery of the 753 housing units Abuja estate of former Central Bank Governor, Godwin Emefiele, recovered by the EFCC,” the statement read.

“This marks a significant milestone in our collective determination to ensure that recovered assets are put to productive use in ways that directly benefit the Nigerian people.”

Dangiwa noted that the Ministry, in partnership with the EFCC, will conduct a joint familiarization tour of the estate to assess its current condition. He said integrity and structural assessments would be carried out to determine the habitability of the buildings and infrastructure.

The Minister further announced that the estate would be made available for public and official use. “The Ministry will offer the units for sale both to the public and for special government needs. For the public sale component, we will adopt a transparent and competitive process, including a nationwide advertisement and the use of the Renewed Hope Portal, where interested Nigerians can submit their Expressions of Interest,” he added.

Speaking during the handover, EFCC Chairman Olanipekun Olukoyede emphasized the importance of transparency in the management of recovered assets.

“It is important for us to demonstrate to Nigerians that whatever proceeds of crime we recover in the course of our work, their application will be made transparent so that we will not allow looted assets to be looted again,” Olukoyede said.

The recovered estate is one of several assets linked to Emefiele amid ongoing investigations into alleged financial misconduct during his tenure as CBN governor.
