JAMB TO CONDUCT SPECIAL MOP-UP EXAM FOR CANDIDATES WHO MISSED 2025 UTME

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has announced a new round of mop-up examinations for candidates who missed the recently concluded 2025 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME), offering a fresh chance to over 5.6 per cent of registered applicants.
Speaking during a stakeholders’ meeting in Abuja on Wednesday, JAMB Registrar, Professor Ishaq Oloyede, disclosed that the special examination would cater to all affected candidates—regardless of the reasons behind their absence.
“This time, we are creating a new mop-up. Even those who missed the earlier exam due to absence will get another opportunity,” he stated. “It’s not extraordinary. In any serious system, when students miss an exam, they’re allowed to make up—provided there’s no abuse.”
Oloyede reiterated that the UTME is strictly a placement test, designed to rank candidates for the limited number of available tertiary admission slots—not a comprehensive measure of intelligence or academic potential.
Amid criticism and speculations about bias in the conduct of the examination, the JAMB boss firmly dismissed claims of ethnic prejudice or administrative failure. “I take responsibility, not because I failed, but because that’s leadership,” he said. “I didn’t even realise people viewed issues around me through ethnic lenses. We must rise above such profiling.”
He also commended the resilience of candidates and JAMB staff who pressed forward despite logistical and infrastructural challenges. “We had limited space. We knew if we wasted more time grieving the challenges, students would lose their opportunity,” he added.
While the exact date for the special mop-up exam is yet to be announced, JAMB assured candidates that it remains committed to fairness, transparency, and equal opportunity in its admission processes.
