In a major breakthrough in the fight against banditry, the Niger State Police Command arrested the village head of Guiwa, Mallam Garba Mohammed, alongside thirteen others for allegedly aiding and abetting criminal elements in Mashegu Local Government Area.

The arrests followed a series of clearance operations carried out by police operatives and local vigilante members in identified bandit hideouts within the Magaman-Daji forest and surrounding areas.

The operations, which began on May 22, 2025, forced many suspected kidnappers to flee, with some believed to have escaped with gunshot wounds.

According to a police source, the operation continued on May 23, 2025, when the joint team, acting on credible intelligence, raided Guiwa and Telle villages. During the raid, the Mai-Angwan of Guiwa, Mallam Garba Mohammed, was apprehended for allegedly shielding bandits.

Reports alleged that his residence was used as a hideout by the criminals. Authorities also recovered four motorcycles and ten cattle believed to be stolen, all found in his custody.

Thirteen other suspects were picked up from various locations across Mashegu LGA for their alleged roles in supporting banditry. The suspects are currently undergoing interrogation as investigations continue to determine their level of involvement.

The Police Command reaffirmed its commitment to ridding the state of criminal elements and urged the public to provide timely and credible information to assist ongoing operations.
