The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has confirmed that 19 people, including five children, lost their lives in a devastating road accident that occurred on Sunday along the Lokoja-Obajana road in Kogi State.
State Sector Commander of the FRSC, Mr. Kumar Tsukwam, disclosed the tragic news to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Monday. He said the crash, which happened around 4:00 p.m. at Gadabiu community in Lokoja Local Government Area, involved a head-on collision between an articulated truck and a Toyota Hummer bus traveling from the southern region of the country to Abuja.
According to Tsukwam, the accident was caused by excessive speed and wrongful overtaking by the bus driver, who attempted to overtake another vehicle and collided with an oncoming truck.
“It was very unfortunate. The crash involved 27 people. Nineteen were killed instantly — most of them burnt beyond recognition — while eight others sustained varying degrees of injuries, including bruises, cuts, dislocations, fractures, and fire burns,” he stated.
Rescue teams from the FRSC and police rushed the injured to Fisayo Hospital in Obajana for urgent medical treatment.
Tsukwam expressed deep sorrow over the incident and urged motorists to refrain from reckless driving practices, especially overspeeding and dangerous overtaking, which remain leading causes of fatal accidents on Nigerian roads.
“Our highways are not racetracks,” he cautioned. “Motorists must obey traffic rules and drive responsibly to prevent such avoidable tragedies.”
The FRSC continues to advocate for safer road use and emphasizes that compliance with traffic regulations is crucial to reducing the alarming rate of road crashes and fatalities across the country.
