Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ola Olukoyede, has called on Nigerians to refrain from prematurely condemning Niger Delta figure Chief Government Ekpemupolo, popularly known as Tompolo, over allegations of Naira abuse.

The call comes after a viral video surfaced showing Tompolo dancing while N1,000 notes were lavishly sprayed during his 54th birthday celebration, sparking public criticism and claims of selective enforcement of anti-graft laws.

In an interview on Sunday, Olukoyede confirmed that Tompolo has been invited by the Commission for questioning but stressed that he remains innocent until the conclusion of investigations.

“Not until we conclude the case can we determine whether Tompolo is guilty or not,” the EFCC Chairman stated. “We must give every Nigerian fair hearing and the benefit of the doubt.”

Social media users had challenged the EFCC to take action, accusing the agency of potentially ignoring the incident due to Tompolo’s influence. Olukoyede, however, reaffirmed the Commission’s commitment to due process and impartiality in law enforcement.

The EFCC has intensified its crackdown on Naira abuse in recent months, warning that spraying or mishandling the currency is a punishable offense under Nigerian law.
