Nigeria’s Senate President, Godswill Obot Akpabio, on Tuesday, failed to acknowledge or address a group of children from three Abuja schools who had come to the National Assembly to celebrate Children’s Day in his honour.
As part of an annual tradition, selected schools visit the parliament on Children’s Day, where the Senate President is expected to offer words of encouragement and share the government’s plans for children’s welfare. However, to the dismay of attendees, Akpabio walked past the children without offering any greeting, despite the presence of journalists.
The students, drawn from Our Lady of Fatima Sisters Academy in Jabi, Catherina International Academy in Dawaki, and Lead British International School in Gwarimpa, were left disappointed after turning out in large numbers for the event.
A female teacher, who chose to remain anonymous, expressed her disappointment, noting that the children were demoralized and unable to even recognize which of the individuals in the Senate President’s entourage was Akpabio. She added that the children had waited for three hours for his arrival, only to be left without any words of encouragement.

She contrasted the incident with previous years when past Senate Presidents warmly engaged with the children and offered messages of hope for their future.
“We have spent three hours with the Sergeant-At-Arm coordinating us, but we are disappointed that the Senate President didn’t address us.
“Many children didn’t know him, except on television and you journalists also know that being here is also part of an excursion that will further enlighten the children”, she said.
