TWO KILLED, 15 INJURED IN OSUN LONE ACCIDENT

Two people were confirmed dead, while 15 others were injured in a lone accident that occurred around Iwo Junction, along Osogbo/Gbongan road, Gbongan on Wednesday.

A statement by the Osun Sector Public Education Officer of the Federal Road Safety Corps, Agnes Ogungbemi, explained that the truck involved was heading to Ikire from Kebbi State when the accident happened.

An unspecified number of animals in the truck also died, with many others unable to stand as a result of the injuries they sustained in the crash.

Ogungbemi who said preliminary investigation revealed that the truck had conveyed about 70 animals which included cattle, goats, and sheep, alongside many other human passengers sitting on top of the animals.

Giving more information about the accident with occurred around 08:26 am, Ogungbemi said, “The vehicle was reportedly travelling from Kebbi State en route to Ikire, Osun State.

“According to statements from some of the passengers, the driver had dozed off on at least two occasions after the truck passed Osogbo. Upon reaching the Surprise Hotel Area in Gbongan, the driver allegedly fell asleep again. As a result, the truck veered off the road and plunged into a roadside ditch, overturning and violently ejecting both animals and passengers.

“Two fatalities were recorded at the scene, while 15 other passengers sustained varying degrees of injuries.”

She also said the FRSC officers that responded to a distress call from the scene took two injured victims and one dead body to a private hospital in Gbongan, while 13 other injured passengers and one corpse were taken to another private hospital also in Gbongan.

In his admonition to the road users, the FRSC Osun Sector Commander, Mr Leye Adegboyega, warned that all vehicles that were not roadworthy would not be allowed on the state highway.
