The Delta State Police Command has recorded major breakthroughs in its crackdown on violent crime, with three suspected kidnappers shot dead in a gun duel and several others arrested in separate sting operations.
According to a statement released Thursday by the state police spokesperson, the operations were spearheaded by the CP-Special Assignment Team (CP-SAT), led by ASP Robinson Julius and acting on the directive of Commissioner of Police, CP Olufemi Abaniwonda.
The deadly encounter occurred along the Ughelli-Patani Road on Tuesday, when operatives on covert patrol intercepted a suspicious shuttle bus at Ewhereni Junction. The suspects reportedly opened fire in a bid to escape, prompting a fierce gun battle with police operatives.
Three suspects sustained critical injuries and later died in the hospital. An AK-47 rifle loaded with 18 live rounds was recovered at the scene, while other suspects fled and remain at large.
In a related operation on May 24, the CP-SAT team apprehended a notorious robbery suspect identified as Ifeanyi Okolie, also known as “Black Jesus,” who is alleged to have been behind multiple motorcycle thefts and robberies in Asaba and its environs.
Okolie led police to a hideout in the bush, where officers recovered three locally made guns, four live cartridges, and a suspected stolen motorcycle. Three accomplices — Ogochukwu Emmanuel, Joseph Egwu, and Yakubu Yusuf — were also arrested. Police additionally recovered a Beretta pistol from another suspect known as “Nino,” who remains on the run.
Commissioner Abaniwonda hailed the CP-SAT team for their professionalism and tenacity, saying, “These significant successes demonstrate the command’s resolute commitment to dismantling criminal networks and enhancing the safety and security of all residents across Delta State.”
He urged the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to the police via the command’s control room numbers, assuring continued efforts to rid the state of crime. Investigations are ongoing.
