A former British Royal Marine, Paul Doyle, appeared before Liverpool Magistrates’ Court on Friday to face multiple charges after allegedly driving his vehicle into a jubilant crowd of Liverpool Football Club supporters, leaving 79 people injured during the club’s Premier League title celebration.

The 53-year-old businessman and father of three is facing seven charges, including dangerous driving and causing grievous bodily harm with intent, following Monday’s incident that turned a day of joy into one of chaos and panic.

During his brief court appearance, Doyle confirmed his name, date of birth, and address. Reporters in the courtroom noted that he appeared emotional and held back tears as proceedings were adjourned.

The devastating event unfolded in central Liverpool, where hundreds of thousands of fans had gathered to celebrate the Reds’ record-equalling 20th English top-flight title. A dark Ford Galaxy was seen in video footage ploughing through the cheering crowd, injuring people ranging in age from 9 to 78.

Though no fatalities were reported, seven people remain hospitalized, according to Merseyside Police Assistant Chief Constable Jenny Sims.

Four victims, including a child, were trapped under the vehicle and had to be rescued by emergency services who lifted the car to free them. Other videos showed the crowd confronting the driver, smashing the car’s rear windows as police struggled to contain the situation.

Sarah Hammond of the Crown Prosecution Service said Doyle was charged after a “complex and ongoing investigation,” noting that prosecutors and police are reviewing substantial evidence including video footage and eyewitness accounts. “It is important to ensure every victim gets the justice they deserve,” she said.

Authorities have ruled out terrorism as a motive and confirmed that the suspect is a white British man, a move aimed at curbing the spread of misinformation online. The clarification comes amid heightened sensitivities following last year’s riots in the region, which were fueled by false claims on social media.

The CPS has stated that all charges will remain under review as investigations continue. Doyle remains in custody pending further legal proceedings.
