Liverpool Football Club have officially announced the signing of Dutch international Jeremie Frimpong from Bundesliga champions Bayer Leverkusen, adding pace and dynamism to their right flank ahead of the new season.
The 24-year-old defender completed his move to Anfield on Friday after passing a medical and signing a long-term contract at the AXA Training Centre. Though the club has not disclosed the length of the deal, it is understood to be a multi-year agreement.
Frimpong, who enjoyed a stellar campaign with Bayer Leverkusen during their historic unbeaten domestic season in 2023-24, arrives with a reputation as one of Europe’s most exciting right-sided players. He contributed 30 goals and 44 assists in 190 appearances for the German club and was a pivotal figure in their Bundesliga and DFB-Pokal triumphs.
Speaking to Liverpool’s official media, an enthusiastic Frimpong described joining the Reds as a “no-brainer.”
“Liverpool came and said they had interest, and obviously for me it was a no-brainer,” he said. “I’m going to give my all, my energy, my work-rate and hopefully we can win together.”
Born in Amsterdam and a product of Manchester City’s academy, Frimpong previously played for Celtic, where he won three domestic titles before joining Leverkusen in 2021. His outstanding performances earned him back-to-back Bundesliga Team of the Season honors in 2022-23 and 2023-24.
Frimpong made his senior debut for the Netherlands in October 2023 and has since won 12 caps, scoring one goal.
The new Liverpool signing also shared his excitement about working with incoming manager Arne Slot, who joins from Feyenoord.
“I spoke to the manager a few times. He sounds very positive… I’ve always heard good things about the coach. Now he’s going to be my coach, so I’m excited for that,” Frimpong said.
Liverpool stated that Frimpong’s squad number will be revealed later this summer.
