The Nigeria Police Force has rescued 23 kidnap victims across Niger and Enugu states in a series of coordinated operations aimed at dismantling criminal networks and tackling the rising threat of abduction in parts of the country.
Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Muyiwa Adejobi, disclosed the development in a statement on Friday, highlighting successful rescue efforts carried out by police operatives in both regions.
In Niger State, armed kidnappers had stormed Hayin-Dogo and Dangunu villages in Sarkin-Pawa, Munya Local Government Area, abducting five individuals including one Usman Daina. While Daina was released after two days in captivity, sustained efforts by security operatives led to the safe recovery of the remaining four victims—Deborah Daina, Gambo Amos, Cyprus Titus, and Satti Iko—on May 22. The victims have since been reunited with their families.
In Enugu State, police operatives attached to the state command launched a successful rescue operation in Uvuru-Ukpata forest, Uzo-Uwani LGA, following the abduction of commuters along the Olo-Umulokpa Road. A fierce gun battle with the kidnappers resulted in the rescue of nine hostages.
Additionally, police personnel earlier rescued two men on May 16 from a forest in Amalla-Egazi, following their abduction in Ezimo community.
Another operation on May 23 saw police, in collaboration with local vigilantes, raid a forest along the Enugu-Kogi border. One kidnapper was neutralized in the ensuing gunfight, while others fled with gunshot wounds. Eight kidnapped victims were safely rescued during the raid.
Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, commended the bravery and professionalism of the officers involved, as well as the crucial support from local security outfits and community members.
“The Nigeria Police Force remains resolute in its mission to make the country uninhabitable for criminals,” IGP Egbetokun stated, reaffirming the force’s commitment to safeguarding lives and restoring public confidence nationwide.
