LAGOS STATE TO REINSTATE MONTHLY SANITATION EXERCISE, WARNS MARKETS OVER POOR HYGIENE
By Aishat Momoh. O.
The Lagos State Government has announced plans to resume its monthly environmental sanitation exercise, underscoring a renewed commitment to cleaner and more habitable surroundings across the state.
Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, made this known on Sunday during an inspection tour of Idi-Araba, Orile Iganmu, and Alaba Rago Market, where he decried the poor sanitation conditions and issued a stern warning to violators.
According to a statement by the ministry’s spokesman, Kunle Adeshina, Wahab stated that the government has resolved to formally reinstate the monthly sanitation, with a public announcement of the commencement date to follow soon.
At Alaba Rago Market, Wahab criticized traders for dumping waste on road medians, encroaching on public roads, and obstructing drainage infrastructure. He warned that the market risks being shut down again as it was last year unless immediate corrective measures are taken.
“We have given them till tomorrow evening to clear the infractions and reclaim ownership of the infrastructure,” Wahab said. “Failure to comply will leave us with no option but to seal the market.”
The commissioner also issued a directive to traders operating along roads, drainage setbacks, and medians to relocate their wares into the designated market spaces. He warned that the market would be locked by 6 p.m. Monday if illegal trading continued.
Reiterating the provisions of the Lagos State Environmental Law, Wahab stressed that trading on roads and near drainage channels remains illegal, and offenders risk market closure.
He urged residents to adopt responsible waste disposal practices, cautioning against indiscriminate dumping and encouraging them to properly bag and dispose of their waste.
“The responsibility of maintaining a clean Lagos lies with all of us,” Wahab said. “We must stop littering public infrastructure and begin to take ownership of the facilities provided by the government.”
The renewed sanitation effort forms part of the administration’s broader environmental reform strategy aimed at ensuring a healthier, safer, and more sustainable Lagos.
