The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has issued a nationwide weather forecast warning of thunderstorms and heavy rainfall across various parts of the country from Monday through Wednesday.
In its weather outlook released Sunday in Abuja, NiMet projected that northern states including Taraba, Kaduna, Gombe, Bauchi, Kebbi, Sokoto, Katsina, Jigawa, and Kano would experience morning thunderstorms on Monday, with additional rains expected later in the day over Borno and Zamfara.
The North-Central region will not be spared, with early thunderstorms and rains anticipated in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Niger, and Nasarawa States. As the day progresses, similar weather conditions are expected in Plateau, Kwara, Kogi, and Benue States.
In the southern region, morning rains are expected across Ondo, Ogun, Edo, Ebonyi, Abia, Cross River, Rivers, and Akwa Ibom States. Later in the afternoon and evening, rainfall is projected across most southern states including Lagos, Oyo, Enugu, Anambra, and Bayelsa.
By Wednesday, thunderstorms and rains will persist, affecting areas in the North such as Zamfara, Adamawa, and Sokoto. North-Central states including the FCT, Nasarawa, and Benue will also see continued downpours. Southern states are expected to experience widespread rain throughout the day.
NiMet also cautioned that strong winds may precede thunderstorms, urging residents to secure loose objects, avoid driving in heavy rain, and stay away from tall trees to prevent injuries from falling branches.
The agency advised airline operators to obtain airport-specific weather documentation for safe flight planning and encouraged the public to stay updated through NiMet’s official website: www.nimet.gov.ng.
