The government of Turkey has extended heartfelt condolences to Nigeria following the devastating floods that ravaged Mokwa and surrounding communities in Niger State, resulting in the deaths of at least 151 people and the displacement of over 3,000 residents.

In a statement issued Sunday by the Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ankara expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy, highlighting the loss of lives and widespread destruction caused by the floods.

“We are deeply saddened by the loss of lives and destruction caused by the devastating floods in the Mokwa region of Niger State, Nigeria. We extend our condolences to the families of those who lost their lives and to the people of Nigeria,” the statement read.

The expression of solidarity from Turkey comes as Nigeria grapples with the aftermath of one of the country’s deadliest natural disasters in recent years.

President Bola Tinubu, responding swiftly to the crisis, dispatched a high-level delegation to Niger State on Saturday to assess the damage and coordinate emergency relief efforts.

According to the Niger State Government, beyond the death toll and mass displacement, the floods also destroyed over 260 homes, township roads, and vital bridges in Mokwa and Raba, exacerbating the humanitarian crisis.

The federal and state governments, along with local and international partners, continue to mobilize resources to support affected communities and prevent further loss.
