The Lagos State Government has reiterated its unwavering support for Nigeria’s creative industry, underscoring the importance of robust political and legal frameworks to drive sustained growth.

This reaffirmation was given at the 2025 Copyright Society of Nigeria – COSON Lecture, a flagship event of the ongoing COSON Week, held at COSON House, Ikeja.

Speaking on behalf of the Lagos State Commissioner for Tourism, Arts and Culture, Mrs. Toke Benson-Awoyinka at the event, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Mr. Olanrewaju Bajulaiye, highlighted the State’s commitment to infrastructure, cultural authenticity, and institutional support for the sector.

The Commissioner said: “We are not only creating enabling environments with infrastructure like the Lagos Film City in Epe and the Glover Memorial Hall. We also provide institutional and personal support to inspire active participation in the creative space.

She described the creative sector as one of Nigeria’s most resilient and economically significant industries and a thriving economic force capable of sustaining individuals and the nation.

Delivering the keynote lecture at the event, a legal luminary, Babatunde Ogala, SAN, spoke on the theme: “The Political and Legal Environment Necessary for the Continued Growth of the Nigerian Creative Industry.”

He challenged stakeholders to broaden their view beyond music, which he noted tends to dominate public discourse on the industry. “I chose to keep the topic in its original form because it speaks to a wider reality,” he said.

Referencing works like Echoes of A Lá Nicola, Tears, Tears and Blood, and This Is Nigeria, Ogala underscored how the creative sector reflects Nigeria’s complex socio-political narratives.

He stressed the importance of strong legal and policy environments that nurture all branches of creativity, including fashion, literature, film, visual arts, and digital content, describing the industry as a powerful cultural voice and a driver of economic transformation.

Also addressing the audience, COSON Chairman, Chief Tony Okoroji unveiled the robust lineup of activities for COSON Week 2025, which includes educational activities for children, a 24-hour nonstop music festival, free healthcare services for musicians, charity visits and a grand cultural celebration featuring 150 distinguished Nigerians.

Describing the week’s programming as “super explosive and unforgettable,” he emphasised the central role of intellectual property in Nigeria’s future. “We are not just celebrating; we are building a legacy for the next generation of creatives and rights defenders,” he declared.
