Grammy-winning South African vocalist, Tyla, has responded to Nigerian artist, Tiwa Savage, who extended an apology to Black Americans on her behalf regarding her use of the term “coloured. ”

It is important to note that Tyla ignited a controversy after publicly identifying as “coloured,” a term that is widely accepted in South Africa to describe individuals of mixed heritage.

Nevertheless, the term carries a painful legacy in the United States, where it is deemed derogatory.

As a result, Tyla has faced significant backlash from Americans, particularly from the Black community.

In response, Tiwa Savage offered an apology to the African-American community on Tyla’s behalf during a recent appearance on the American program The Breakfast Club, proclaiming herself as the “elder” of the ‘Water’ hitmaker.

Savage’s apology incited a backlash from South Africans, who criticized her for speaking on behalf of one of their own without fully understanding their identity and racial lexicon.

Tyla also subtly indicated that the Nigerian singer’s apology does not reflect her stance by stating that she is “not sorry” during her performance at the Global Citizen Festival in New York over the weekend.

“Sorry, I am not sorry,” she asserted prior to performing her song ‘Mr Media. ’

Meanwhile, fellow South Africans have been commending Tyla for distancing herself from Tiwa Savage’s apology.

Thousands of South African social media users shared clips of Tyla’s understated message across various platforms, applauding her for remaining resolute in her racial identity.
