The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has arrested a Togolese driver who allegedly knocked down a pedestrian at the Adeniji Adele intersection, inward Ilubirin, Lagos Island.

The incident, which occurred on Sunday, left the victim critically injured and rushed to the General Hospital, Odan, Lagos Island, for emergency treatment.

LASTMA spokesperson Adebayo Taofiq, in a statement on Monday, said the driver of a Mazda car with registration number EPE 749 GS was speeding recklessly before losing control and hitting the pedestrian.

“Preliminary inquiries disclosed that the Togolese operator, while recklessly propelling the vehicle at an unlawful velocity, lost control and brutally struck a pedestrian who was attempting to cross the roadway,” Taofiq said.

He explained that the driver attempted to flee but was chased down and apprehended by LASTMA operatives, who later handed him over to the Adeniji Adele Police Division for interrogation and prosecution.

Emergency responders from the Lagos State Ambulance Service were promptly activated to transport the injured pedestrian to the hospital for life-saving treatment.

LASTMA General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, condemned the reckless act, sending sympathies to the victim while warning motorists against dangerous driving.

“I fervently wish the injured pedestrian a rapid and full recovery. The Authority remains steadfastly dedicated to protecting human lives and preserving orderliness across the State’s transportation corridors,” Bakare-Oki said.

Despite intensified patrols and enforcement campaigns in recent years, incidents involving pedestrians and reckless drivers persist in Lagos, underscoring the need for strict adherence to traffic laws and heightened public awareness.
