The FIFA Disciplinary Committee has sanctioned the South African Football Association (SAFA) for fielding an ineligible player, Teboho Mokoena, during the FIFA World Cup 2026 preliminary match between South Africa and Lesotho on March 21, 2025.

In a statement, FIFA said the move breached Article 19 of the FIFA Disciplinary Code and Article 14 of the FIFA World Cup 2026 Preliminary Competition Regulations.

As a result, the disciplinary committee ruled that the match be forfeited, awarding Lesotho a 3-0 victory.

In addition, SAFA has been fined CHF 10,000, while Mokoena has been issued a formal warning.

FIFA confirmed that both SAFA and the player were notified of the decision, adding that they have ten days to request a motivated decision. The sanction remains subject to appeal before the FIFA Appeal Committee.
