The Governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, on Friday, revealed that the city’s waterways constitute a fundamental basis for its future economic development, job creation, and resilience to climate change.

Speaking at the African Blue Economy Summit held in Lagos, the governor stressed the dual function of the ocean and inland waters as both a significant heritage and a vast reservoir of opportunity for the state.

In a statement shared on his X (formerly Twitter) account, the governor summarized this vision, “The ocean is not just our heritage, it is our opportunity for jobs, innovation, transport, and resilience against climate change.”

He remarked that the recent hosting of the E1 Lagos GP, Africa’s inaugural all-electric powerboat championship, served as a compelling illustration of how water can inspire “not only sport and entertainment, but also big ideas in technology and sustainability.”

The championship, which emphasizes electric propulsion and clean energy, aligns directly with the state’s environmental and innovation objectives.

The governor confirmed that the state is already supporting its vision with substantial resources.

“Lagos is ready to lead Africa in building a blue economy that works for people today and protects the planet for tomorrow.

“Our investments in water transport, maritime infrastructure, and climate adaptation are only the beginning,” he asserted.

Addressing policymakers, investors, and international stakeholders at the event, which coincided with the E1 Lagos GP championship, Sanwo-Olu positioned Lagos as a continental leader poised to transform its marine assets into sustainable prosperity.

The governor underscored that the transition to a blue economy is essential for the long-term sustainability of the coastal city, shifting away from traditional economic models to capitalize on its aquatic beauty for contemporary solutions.

The summit concluded with a collective recognition from regional and global representatives that Lagos is rapidly emerging as a pivotal hub for innovation and sustainability on the African continent, paving the way for the continent’s natural resources to become a source of shared prosperity.
