The Lagos State Government joined the global community to mark this year’s World Food Day with the theme, “Hand in Hand for Better Food and a Better Future.”

The event, which featured a symbolic walk from the Johnson Jakande Tinubu (JJT) Park, Ikeja, to Allen Junction and back brought together stakeholders in the agricultural sector, farmers, and government officials to celebrate the critical role of agriculture in food security and sustainable development.

Speaking at the event, the Lagos State Commissioner for Agriculture and Food Systems, Ms. Ruth Abisola Olusanya, highlighted the significance of the day, describing it as a time to honour the contributions of farmers to national development.

“In commemoration of World Food Day, which we celebrate annually under the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, the essence is to enlighten the public on the importance of the agricultural sector and to showcase and celebrate our farmers,” she said.

Olusanya commended farmers for their resilience in the face of challenges such as climate change and harsh economic realities, stressing that their commitment keeps the nation fed.

“Farmers go through so much, from climate change impacts to difficult conditions, but they remain strong and committed. We celebrate their resilience today by showcasing and appreciating them,” she added.

She urged all stakeholders to work together to build a sustainable food system. “Let’s all give a hand, hand in hand, for better food and a better future. That is what World Food Day is about,” she concluded.

World Food Day is observed annually on October 16 to promote global awareness and action for those who suffer from hunger and to highlight the need to ensure healthy diets for all.
