SANWO-OLU PROMISES FAIR DEAL FOR LANDLORDS, TENANTS IN NEW LAGOS TENANCY BILL

Babajide Sanwo-Olu, the Governor of Lagos State, said that the Lagos Tenancy Bill is meant to protect the rights of both landlords and tenants and settle housing issues.

The bill is presently before the State House of Assembly, according to the News Agency of Nigeria.

The governor stated during the inauguration of the Sunny Ajose Housing Estate in Ajara, Badagry, on Wednesday that the bill was intended to “protect tenants and landlords alike” and advance an equitable, open renting system throughout the state.

Sanwo-Olu stated that the bill, created in cooperation with the State House of Assembly, will update tenancy regulations and settle what he called “naughty, naughty issues” between landlords and tenants.

“Everyone wants to become landlord. However, you must also have tenants who can support themselves and pay the rent.

“The new law seeks functioning relationship between both sides so that landlords generate cash and tenants may live comfortably,” he stated.

He added that the bill aims to eliminate housing problems, streamline tenancy agreements, and prevent property owners from exploiting renters through unjust costs or evictions.

Sanwo-Olu stated that the government’s housing initiatives, such as rent-to-own and rent-to-live schemes, were already assisting residents in transitioning to home ownership, with intentions to strengthen these programs under the new legislative framework.

“We encourage everyone to take advantage of the rent-to-own program. “Our goal is to make housing affordable and sustainable for all Lagos residents,” the governor stated.

The governor told people that the state’s housing reforms will continue to focus on affordability, accessibility, and equity, as part of President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda. According to him, Lagos would continue to work with the private sector and local communities to provide contemporary, inclusive housing alternatives.

“The tenancy bill is continuation of that cooperation, system in which the government, landlords, and tenants all benefit,” Sanwo-Olu explained.
