Human rights advocate and previous presidential contender of the African Action Congress (AAC), Omoyele Sowore, has declared his intention to spearhead a demonstration on October 20, seeking the liberation of the incarcerated head of the banned Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu.

Sowore made this announcement via a post on his X account on Thursday, characterizing the forthcoming demonstration as a “momentous” march toward the Aso Rock Villa in Abuja.

“We have now established a date for the momentous FreeNnamdiKanuNow protest march to the Aso Rock Villa in Abuja. It is scheduled for October 20 at 7 am,” Sowore stated.

The activist had previously mentioned on Wednesday that he contacted Anambra State Governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo; Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe; Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti; and the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential nominee, Peter Obi, to participate in the protest.

“I made attempts to engage personally with Dr. @alexottiofr, Prof. Charles Chukwuma Soludo @CCSoludo, and Mr. @PeterObi (via his team) today. Alex Otti and Soludo neither answered my calls nor replied to my messages. They assured me they would inform Mr. @PeterObi of our intentions, despite him currently being on a trip. I also reached out to Alhaji @AtikuAbubakar through his team, while Senator @SenatorAbaribe indicated he would return my call. I had a conversation with Obinna Agwuocha of the House of Representatives, who was open and supportive.

“The members of the Abia State House of Assembly informed me that they plan to travel to London next week and will then return directly to Abuja for further actions. They indicated a desire to first consult with the Attorney General of the Federation to file a complaint; they did not foresee a “placard” protest. I assured them that is acceptable; what is most important is that we reach a consensus on a unified date for action.

“This is not a moment for indecision. If we truthfully believe that @MaziNnamdiKanu merits freedom, then every principled leader must act now, not postpone,” he emphasized.
