REPS DEMAND INTESIFIED CRACKDOWN ON BANDITS IN SOKOTO
The House of Representatives has called for urgent and enhanced security measures to combat the escalating incidents of banditry and violent assaults afflicting communities within the Kebbe and Tambuwal Federal Constituency of Sokoto State.
The resolution, initiated by Rep. Abdussamad Dasuki, who represents the Kebbe/Tambuwal Federal Constituency and serves as Chairman of the House Committee on Marine and Blue Economy/Shipping Services, was presented under issues of immediate national significance during the plenary session.
In his address, Dasuki articulated profound concern regarding the rising frequency of homicides, kidnappings, and the resultant displacement of inhabitants from numerous communities, cautioning that these assaults have severely disrupted socio-economic activities and exacerbated poverty in the affected regions.
He referenced multiple assaults that occurred between July and August 2025, including an incursion into Fakku Ward, resulting in five fatalities and the abduction of 28 individuals, an attack on Sangi Ward that compelled residents to seek refuge in Kuchi, Koko, and Kebbe, and another occurrence in Ungushi Ward where two individuals were killed and seven were taken hostage.
“In Tambuwal Local Government Area, bandits targeted Jabo/Kagara Ward on August 20, 2025, displacing four villages, while three young entrepreneurs were abducted in Tambuwal/Shinfiri Ward. He also highlighted the kidnapping of the PDP Youth Leader, Abdullahi Zaki, along with three daughters of a local resident in separate incidents.
“These continuous assaults have devastated families, rendered communities abandoned, and disrupted the education of children. Agriculturalists have deserted their fields due to apprehension of further violence,” he lamented.
Dasuki further underscored that the deteriorating diplomatic relations between Nigeria and the Niger Republic have intensified insecurity in bordering communities, such as Kebbe and Tambuwal, which are increasingly susceptible to the influx of illicit arms and insurgent activities emanating from the Sahel region.
The legislator urged the Nigerian Armed Forces, Police, and various security entities to bolster their presence and amplify collaborative operations within the affected locales to protect lives, property, and agricultural lands.
The House also called upon the Federal Government to enhance efforts to rescue abducted individuals, probe the recurrent assaults, and ensure that the offenders face justice. It encouraged the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and other humanitarian organizations to provide immediate assistance to the displaced populace.
Moreover, the House directed its Committees on Defence, National Security and Intelligence, and Police Affairs to engage with pertinent security agencies to guarantee the expedient execution of the resolutions and to submit a report within two weeks.
Additionally, it tasked the Committees on ECOWAS Parliament and Foreign Affairs to strive towards normalizing Nigeria’s relations with adjacent Sahel nations, particularly the Republic, with the goal of fortifying regional security partnerships and intelligence exchanges.
