LAGOS POLICE DEBUNK CLAIMS OF VIOLENCE DURING OWORONSHOKI DEMOLITION

… Say Officers Maintained Peace, Acted Professionally Throughout Exercise
The Lagos State Police Command has dismissed social media reports alleging that police officers attacked residents during the ongoing demolition exercise in Oworonshoki, describing the claims as false, misleading, and mischievously intended to misrepresent facts.
In a statement issued on October 26, 2025, by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Abimbola Adebisi, on behalf of the Commissioner of Police, CP Olohundare Jimoh, the Command clarified that police personnel were only deployed to the area to maintain peace and order during a lawful demolition exercise conducted by the Lagos State Government and the Lagos State Task Force on Environmental and Special Offences.
“The reports are entirely false, mischievously published to mislead the public and cast aspersions on the professionalism of our officers. The constitutional duty of the Police is the protection of life and property, including safeguarding public officials carrying out lawful duties,” the statement read.
The Command explained that the demolition was handled by the Lagos State Department responsible for Urban Development and Planning following months of official notices to both legal and illegal occupants and after payment of compensation to affected persons.
It emphasised that police presence at the site was solely to prevent any breakdown of law and order, stressing that officers did not engage in any act of violence, harassment, or collaboration with hoodlums as claimed in the viral reports.
“Officers were under strict instructions to act with the highest level of professionalism, restraint, and civility, with full respect for human rights and human dignity,” the statement added.
The Command described all allegations of police misconduct as baseless, inaccurate, and unfounded, urging the public to disregard such narratives.
Reaffirming its commitment to the rule of law and lawful governance, CP Olohundare Jimoh assured residents that the Lagos State Police Command remains dedicated to protecting lives and property, supporting urban development efforts, and ensuring peace and order across the state.
The police also advised the public to verify information before sharing and to continue cooperating with law enforcement agencies in promoting peace and development in Lagos State.
