Real Madrid claimed a hard-fought 2–1 victory over arch-rivals Barcelona at the Santiago Bernabéu on Sunday, moving clear at the top of the La Liga table.

Goals from Kylian Mbappé and Jude Bellingham sealed the win for Los Blancos, who overcame a spirited Barcelona side that briefly drew level through Fermín López.

Mbappé opened the scoring for Madrid just before the half-hour mark, firing a precise low shot from distance beyond the goalkeeper to put the hosts in front.

Barcelona responded in the 38th minute when Fermín pounced on a defensive lapse to slot home the equaliser, silencing the home crowd momentarily. However, Madrid quickly regained control as Bellingham restored their lead just five minutes later, finishing from close range after sustained pressure in the box.

The second half was filled with drama and controversy. Referee César Soto Grado awarded Madrid a penalty shortly after the hour mark, but Barcelona goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny denied Mbappé’s spot kick with a brilliant save to keep his side in the game.

Madrid appeared to extend their lead when Brahim Díaz set up Bellingham for a third goal, but it was ruled out for offside after a VAR review.

Tensions flared late in stoppage time as Barcelona’s Pedri was sent off for a second yellow card following a reckless challenge on Aurélien Tchouameni, reducing the visitors to ten men.

Madrid nearly added a late third through Rodrygo’s free-kick, but Szczesny once again came to Barcelona’s rescue with a fine stop.

The victory ended Real Madrid’s four-game losing streak against their Catalan rivals and reaffirmed their dominance in this season’s title race, as they now sit comfortably atop La Liga.
