LAMIDO ANNOUNCES BID FOR PDP NATIONAL CHAIRMANSHIP

BY JENN NOMAMIUKOR
A previous governor of Jigawa State, Alhaji Sule Lamido, has officially expressed his desire to vie for the role of national chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party.
Lamido conveyed this declaration in a message on his verified Facebook page on Monday, stating that he intends to visit the party‘s national headquarters on the same day to acquire his nomination form.
“By the grace of God, I shall today, Monday, 27th October 2025, by 11 a.m., be at Wadata Plaza, the national headquarters of our great party, the Peoples Democratic Party, to purchase the nomination form to run for the office of National Chairman,” he wrote.
A prominent figure within the PDP and former Minister of Foreign Affairs, Lamido expressed his dedication to revitalizing and fortifying the party in anticipation of upcoming elections.
“My commitment to democracy and resolve to restore our dear party to its old glory is unstoppable,” he added.
PDP, which governed Nigeria from 1999 to 2015, is expected to elect a new National Chairman at its forthcoming national convention.
Lamido’s bid comes after northern PDP stakeholders had earlier endorsed former Minister Kabiru Tanimu Turaki (SAN) as their consensus candidate for the chairmanship role.
At its 102nd National Executive Committee gathering conducted on August 25 in Abuja, the PDP determined to allocate its 2027 presidential candidacy to the South, while designating the role of National Chairman for the North.
Nevertheless, groups affiliated with Lamido and another prominent figure, Nyesom Wike, have dismissed Turaki’s endorsement, contending that the procedure lacked adequate consultation.
This division signifies escalating discord within the PDP regarding its strategy for the 2027 elections, as the party strives for both internal cohesion and reliable leadership.
PDP, in a statement issued on October 25, 2025, named a 13-member National Convention Screening Committee to vet aspirants for national offices ahead of the convention.
According to the statement by the party’s National Convention Organising Committee and signed by its Chairman, Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri, who is also the Governor of Adamawa State, the screening exercise will take place on Tuesday, October 28, 2025.
The committee will be chaired by Eyitayo Jegede (SAN), a former Ondo State governorship candidate and respected legal luminary.
