A light aircraft that took off from Canada has crashed in Greenland, killing the sole occupant on board, the Danish airport authority Naviair confirmed on Monday.

According to a statement from Naviair, the aircraft disappeared from radar on Saturday while flying over the island of Sermitsiaq, located north of Nuuk, Greenland’s capital.

“This morning, the crash site has been located, and unfortunately, there are no survivors,” the authority announced.

Local Greenlandic media reported that the wreckage was discovered after heavy fog cleared over the weekend, enabling search operations to resume.

“The plane was found on the Sermitsiaq mountain, but at a location that is currently inaccessible, which makes it difficult for the authorities to take further action at this time,” Brian Thomsen of the Greenlandic police told the newspaper Sermitsiaq.

Authorities have not yet released the identity of the victim, and recovery operations are ongoing amid challenging terrain and weather conditions.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
