Operatives of the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) of the Lagos State Police Command have arrested an ex-convict and two suspected pickpockets for their alleged involvement in multiple theft-related offences across different parts of the state.
The ex-convict, Segun Kolawole, aged 25, was apprehended just five days after his release from the Kirikiri Correctional Centre. According to a statement issued by the Command’s spokesperson, SP Abimbola Adebisi, on Thursday, October 30, 2025, Kolawole was arrested around 8:00 a.m. on Tuesday, October 28, 2025, at Oshodi Market after operatives observed his suspicious movement.
He was found with ₦80,000 and an Infinix Note 40 Pro phone, both traced to a burglary incident at Opebi, where he allegedly stole ₦200,000 and the mobile phone from a sleeping trader. Police investigations further revealed that he had spent part of the stolen funds on new clothes and shoes, which were also recovered from him.
In a separate operation conducted around 5:00 p.m. on Friday, October 24, 2025, RRS operatives arrested Sodiq Isa (27) and Adekanmbi Ganiu (21) for attempting to steal mobile phones from unsuspecting commuters in different areas of Lagos. The suspects were apprehended before escaping with their intended loot.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the duo specialised in pickpocketing during rush hours in crowded areas, particularly at bus stops and in traffic jams. They reportedly targeted commuters and pedestrians, snatching phones and wallets from victims as they boarded commercial vehicles.
Recovered exhibits have since been returned to their rightful owners, while all three suspects remain in custody at the RRS Headquarters for further investigation. The police said the suspects would be charged in court upon completion of the investigation.
The Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command, CP Moshood Jimoh, commended the RRS operatives for their professionalism, vigilance, and swift action in curbing criminal activities in the state.
He reiterated the Command’s commitment to intelligence-led policing, proactive crime prevention, and continuous enforcement against criminal elements, assuring Lagos residents of sustained efforts to maintain peace and safety across the state.
