Residents of Oremeji in the Shasha area of Alimosho Local Government, Lagos State, were thrown into panic on Sunday, November 9, following an altercation that led to the stabbing of a Nigerian Air Force officer by local youths.

Community sources who spoke to said the incident occurred at a football pitch after a confrontation between the officer who was not in uniform and some youths.

A resident identified as Baba narrated, “Some boys were playing football when the ball hit the man. He tried to seize the ball and beat the boy who kicked it. People intervened, but he punched the boy. As more people gathered, he brought out a knife, stabbed the football and threatened anyone who touched him. A fight broke out, and one of the boys managed to disarm him and stabbed him.”

The officer was rushed to hospital. Initial rumours suggested he had died.

Another resident, Sola, said Air Force personnel allegedly stormed the area afterward, beating residents while searching for those involved. This led to heightened tension across the community.

“From that moment, the whole area has been in panic,” he said.

Shop owners have reportedly begun closing earlier due to fear of reprisals. A resident, identified simply as Eniola, said, “The people who committed the act have fled, but innocent people are being punished.”

Another witness, Esther Komolafe, claimed military personnel deployed tear gas during a subsequent operation. “The area is still tense, and we avoid the route in the evening,” she said.

However, spokesperson for the Lagos State Police Command, Abimbola Adebisi, confirmed during a telephone interview that the officer is alive.

“There was a fight between some individuals. The injured person happened to be an Air Force officer. He was only injured; nobody died,” Adebisi said, adding that the matter was not formally reported but the Divisional Police Officer visited the scene.

Responding to allegations of harassment of residents by military personnel, Adebisi said, “The claim that Air Force officers have been disturbing people is not true. The issue was resolved with the intervention of the DPO, community leaders and the Air Force commandant.”

Attempts to reach the Nigerian Air Force spokesperson, Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame, were unsuccessful as of press time.

The incident is reminiscent of a 2021 clash in Oshodi, reported by Premium Times, when military officers stormed the area following the death of an Air Force member allegedly attacked by hoodlums.
