The Senate has approved President Bola Tinubu’s choice of Mrs. Ayo Hulayat Omidiran from Osun State to serve as Chairman of the Federal Character Commission (FCC). They also approved Hon. Peter Ogbonna Eze, who represents Enugu State, and 36 other nominees to become Federal Commissioners.

The confirmations followed the presentation and adoption of a screening report by the Senate Committee on Federal Character and Inter-Governmental Affairs during Thursday’s plenary, presided over by Senate President Godswill Akpabio.

Presenting the report, committee chairman Senator Allwell Heacho Onyesoh (PDP, Rivers East) said all the nominees, including Omidiran and Eze, were checked on Tuesday, November 13, 2025, and were found to be qualified and able to do the job.

He said, “The committee did not get any complaints about any of the nominees being involved in criminal activities.
They gave all the necessary documents and showed they are capable of taking on the roles they were nominated for.

Onyesoh explained that the process of checking them involved looking at their work history, certificates showing they follow rules and standards, police records, reports from the Department of State Services, and other important papers.
Each nominee also gave a formal talk and had a detailed discussion with the committee.

The chairman said that the nominees from all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory met the requirements set by the constitution to serve in the Commission.
He called them “very qualified,” and added that Peter Eze clearly understood the mission of the Federal Character Commission and the changes needed to improve it.

He said, “His appointment will help the Federal Character Commission to look at old laws and make them fit with today‘s situation.”

Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele proposed that the chamber move to a committee style for reviewing the nominees one clause at a time.
Supporting the motion, Deputy Minority Leader Senator Olalere Oyewumi said,  “From their resumes, they have worked in different positions both locally and abroad. I thank the President for recognizing them as suitable candidates.”

After a state-by-state review, the Committee of the Whole adopted the report without objection and reverted to plenary. Akpabio thereafter subjected the nominations to a voice vote, which received unanimous approval.

Earlier, President Tinubu had listed Peter Eze among the nominees in a statement released by presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga.

Eze is an economist and public administrator from Aji, which is in the Igbo-Eze North area of Enugu State. He currently works as Executive Assistant to Senator Orji Uzor Kalu. He studied economics at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, and later got a master‘s degree in Customs Management from the University of International Business and Economics in Beijing. He has won several awards, like the Most Outstanding Student Award from UIBE in 2019, the Rotary Leadership Excellence Award in 2023, and the China-Nigeria Friendship Award in 2022.

He has worked in important positions such as Head of the International Desk at the Chinese CEO Group in Beijing, Executive Secretary at the Orji Uzor Kalu Foundation, Special Correspondent at The Sun Newspapers, Director of Procurement and Logistics at Slok Nigeria Ltd, Director of Strategy at The Sun Publishing Ltd, and Director of Operations at The New Telegraph.
