The Lagos State Government has announced the commencement of the 21st edition of its annual Spelling Bee Competition, a flagship academic contest renowned for promoting literacy and grooming young leaders.
The announcement was made by the Honourable Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Mr. Jamiu Tolani Alli-Balogun, while addressing journalists. He described the 2025 edition as exceptional and aligned with the THEMES Plus Agenda of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s administration.
According to Alli-Balogun, the Ministry has worked diligently to elevate the quality and impact of this year’s competition.
“We are proud to promote literacy and language development among our young people, and this competition reflects our dedication to nurturing these essential skills,” he said.
The event is being organized by the Office of Education Quality Assurance (OEQA) in collaboration with the New Era Foundation.
The 2025 Spelling Bee is scheduled to take place at the Eko FM Multi-Purpose Hall, Agidingbi, Ikeja:
Tuesday, December 2, 2025 – Junior Category (Primary School Students)
Wednesday, December 3, 2025 – Senior Category (Secondary School Students)
Alli-Balogun noted that the Lagos State Spelling Bee remains one of the most highly anticipated academic competitions in the state, providing a platform for students to showcase spelling prowess, confidence, and intellectual depth.
In addition to several attractive cash prizes, the overall winner of the Senior Category will automatically assume the prestigious title of One-Day Governor, granting the student an opportunity to experience leadership and governance firsthand.
To ensure excellence and seamless delivery, the Commissioner disclosed that a planning committee was inaugurated in October. The committee has already engaged technical partners, including a renowned quiz master, to maintain the competition’s established standards and integrity.
He assured that this 21st edition will be “engaging, innovative, and memorable,” with new features aimed at enriching the experience for participants and attendees.
The Spelling Bee Competition, he added, remains a strategic platform for inspiring academic excellence and nurturing future leaders.
